Pembridge Square Community Mural, 2002
Restoration 2016 by Alice Simms and Luke Vawter
Location: 2315 Blueridge Avenue
Artist: Jorge Luis Somarriba and residents

With the success of the 2001 mural, another mural was commissioned by the Montgomery Housing Partnership for Pembridge Square Apartment complex in 2002. Funding was provided by Community Block Development Grant funds and Target Stores, Inc. Muralist Jorge Somarriba was selected again to work with 10 youth residents of the Amherst Square and Pembridge Square (paid an honorarium of $6/hour). Some teens from the first mural were enlisted to work on the new mural. This provided a mentoring opportunity as they worked with the new teen mural artists from the community. Together, Somarriba and the teen artists designed and painted a 56’ long mural installed over the Pembridge Square Apartments Community Center, the site of recurring gang graffiti.

Restoration of Pembridge Community Mural
Sixteen years ago, students in the community had created a mural of in the Pembridge Apartments. In 2016, Arts for The People artists Alice Simms and Luke Vawter restored the mural.
