Learn how to crochet hyperbolically with Jennifer Lindsay from the Smithsonian Community Reef. The Smithsonian Community Reef is a satellite reef of the world-traveling Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef Project started by Margaret and Christine Wertheim of the Institute For Figuring in Los Angeles to raise awareness about the plight of coral reefs from global warming, pollution and over-fishing.
The Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef, a collaboratively constructed coral reef in crochet, will be exhibited from October 16 - April 23, 2011 (the exhibition has just been extended to include Earth Day, April 22, 2011). As part of the exhibition, residents of the National Capital Area and beyond are invited to participate in constructing a local reef, the Smithsonian Community Reef, that will be shown with the Hyperbolic Crochet Coral Reef in the National Museum of History's Sant Ocean Hall Focus Gallery. Making crocheted coral for the reef is fun, easy to learn, and the project's nexus of traditional handicraft, higher math, and marine science brings out creativity and excitement in everyone it touches. You too can learn to crochet coral for the reef, and join in the fun! Materials will be provided or you can bring your own.
