Montgomery County Planners to Host Community Meeting to Inform Downtown Wheaton Sector Plan Process

WHEATON – Residents, property owners and others interested in the future of downtown Wheaton should attend a September 21 forum hosted by Montgomery County planners. The forum provides an opportunity for residents to learn more about the preliminary recommendations for the proposed Wheaton Central Business District & Vicinity Sector Plan and offer their suggestions about how the plan might progress.

The proposed sector plan will identify ways to encourage good design, efficient transportation, better pedestrian links, inviting public spaces, environmental sustainability and more. Planners view the forum as one way to learn from Wheaton residents, workers and business owners about what they think the Wheaton of the future might look like.

The community forum will offer participants an opportunity to comment on staff’s ideas about sustainability, the character of public features like streets and sidewalks, as well as the types of open spaces appropriate for Wheaton.

The Planning Department last examined Wheaton’s commercial center 18 years ago. Planners develop master and sector plans to create a framework for each community designed to last 15 to 20 years. Those visions help planners and policy-makers – such as the Planning Board and County Council – make policy and decide on proposed development.
