Montgomery County Planning Board Schedules July 29 Public Hearing for Wheaton Sector Plan
Planners have sketched out a vision for downtown Wheaton that encourages reinvestment and inviting public spaces as part of the proposed Wheaton Central Business District Sector Plan.
That vision now goes to the Montgomery County Planning Board, which will deliberate the plan recommendations before sending it to the County Council for consideration. The first step of the Planning Board’s process is a July 29 public hearing at which residents, property owners, employers and others are invited to provide input on the plan recommendations.
The hearing, to be held at Park and Planning Headquarters at 8787 Georgia Ave., Silver Spring, begins at 7 p.m. The Board will then schedule a series of worksessions in the fall to deliberate specific plan aspects.
The Wheaton Sector Plan draft focuses on strategies for revitalization, including land use and zoning, good design, efficient transportation, environmental sustainability and improvements to public facilities. Planners have recommended mixed development – housing, shops, restaurants and offices – and renewed civic spaces as a way to make a more walkable community. The recommendations make best use of the Wheaton Metro Station by calling for sidewalks and hiker/biker trails that encourage people to walk more. The plan draft also calls for diverse housing and a mix of businesses to improve the area’s quality of place.
The Planning Department last examined Wheaton’s Sector Plan 19 years ago. Master and sector plans look ahead 15 to 20 years to create a long-range planning framework for each community.
